Recently, Microsoft made an announcement about reaching an agreement to acquire GilHub, world’s largest open platform for software developers where over 28 million developers visit, collaborate and share codes. Microsoft plans to sustain the legacy of GitHub and empower software developers across the globe to achieve success in every stage of development cycle along with Microsoft’s developer tools and services open for all audiences.
Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft released the following statement regarding joining forces with GitHub and recognizing the
“Microsoft is a developer-first company, and by joining forces with GitHub we strengthen our commitment to developer freedom, openness and innovation. We recognize the community responsibility we take on with this agreement and will do our best work to empower every developer to build, innovate and solve the world’s most pressing challenges.”
The terms of agreement confirms that Microsoft will acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock. Due to customary closing conditions and regulatory review, the acquisition is expected to be closed by the end of this year.
GitHub gets to retain its developer-first philosophy and is going to operate independently to give an open platform to developers across all industry verticals. Developers will continue to use the updated tools, codes and OS of their choice for their projects and deploy their code to any OS, cloud or device.
Nat Friedman, founder of Xamarin, and Microsoft Vice President will take on the role of CEO of GitHub. Chris Wanstrath, the current CEO will report to Executive Vice president Scott Guthrie at Microsoft, working on strategic software initiatives by.
